How many hours each option covers, which free seats reach central Brooklyn next fall, and the dates that decide it.
3-K is New York City’s free preschool program for children in the year they turn three, and most seats run 6 hours and 20 minutes a day, 180 days a year. A working parent’s day runs closer to ten hours, so families looking at daycare, Prospect Heights through Crown Heights, are rarely choosing on quality alone. They are working out who covers the afternoon, the summer, and the months before September. With the 3-K application for fall 2027 opening January 13 and free 2-K expanding across Brooklyn next fall, this is the season to map those hours out.
3-K is free, full-day early education offered through NYC Public Schools and its partner centers. “Full day” means a school day: most programs run 6 hours and 20 minutes, usually from about 8:30am to 2:30pm, 180 days a year, according to InsideSchools’ guide to 3-K and pre-K options.
Put that beside a center open 7:30am to 6pm and the gap is about four hours every weekday. Across a full year, a 180-day calendar leaves roughly 80 weekdays, summer included, when a school-day seat is closed and most offices are open.
Some sites offer Extended Day and Year seats with up to 10 hours of care year-round, but eligibility depends on your family’s circumstances, as the NYC Public Advocate’s 3-K explainer notes. Families who don’t qualify fill the afternoon and the summer with a nanny share, an after-care program, or a second provider, often in a different building.
At Playto’s Prospect Heights center, teachers are available from 7:30am to 6pm, with early drop-off and late pickup on request, and the center stays open through the holidays. The whole working day happens in one room with one team.

The NYC 3K seat wins on cost for the hours it covers. Private care wins on the hours it doesn’t, and on start dates that follow your return to work rather than the school year.
The city’s free program for two-year-olds opened this fall with about 2,000 seats in Districts 6, 10, 18, 23 and 27. On October 19, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that 2-K will grow to more than 12,000 seats across 22 of the city’s 32 school districts in fall 2027, as NY1 reported. The mayor said the program “will save parents more than $25,000 per child per year.”
In Brooklyn, Districts 16, 17, 19, 20, 21 and 32 join the list. District 17 covers much of Crown Heights, so a Crown Heights daycare search for a two-year-old should include the new seats. District 13, which includes Prospect Heights, and District 15, which includes Park Slope, are not on the fall 2027 list.
The city has not yet released 2-K hours or the 2027 application timeline. In the first year, children with fall birthdays could face a wait because of health code rules, Chalkbeat reported. Until those details arrive, plan around the hours you know you need. Two-year-olds at Playto are in the Young Explorers program, which runs the full 7:30am to 6pm day.
Children born in 2024 are eligible for 3-K seats starting in September 2027. The application opens January 13, 2027 and closes February 26, 2027, and InsideSchools reports that every child who applies by the deadline is promised a seat. Last cycle, offers went out in mid-May.
That calendar suits a September start. It suits a parent whose leave ends in March far less, and the two-year-old’s year between now and then still has to be planned separately. Filing a 3K application costs nothing, so you can apply in January and keep private care in place while you wait for the offer.
Parents often hear daycare as supervision and preschool as learning. In practice, daycare vs preschool today is mostly a question of hours, calendar and how you enroll, because good programs for toddlers teach all day.
Playto’s day follows a stage-by-stage approach covering physical, social, cognitive, emotional, language and early academic foundations. Children move from Tiny Cruisers (birth to 12 months) to Little Pathfinders (1 to 2), Young Explorers (2 to 3) and Rising Stars, for ages three to five. A child who starts at three can stay in the same building through age five instead of switching programs between the 3-K and Pre-K years.
Daily logistics differ too. At Playto, diapers, formula, meals and snacks are included, or families can bring their own, and the food and nutrition program explains what lands on the table each day.
A free seat and private care often work as a pair. The free seat covers the school day, and something else covers 2:30pm to 6pm, school breaks and summer. The real question is whether that something else is one consistent provider or several.
Two financial tools help with the private side. A dependent care FSA, if your employer offers one, lets you set aside up to $7,500 a year in 2026 before tax for eligible child care. Some employers also partner directly with providers, and Playto’s employer partnership program is worth raising with your HR team. Free childcare NYC programs cover the school day at no cost, so these tools matter most for the hours around it.
Ask what happens on a day public schools close and your office doesn’t, and check the answer against the center’s published holiday calendar. Ask who is in the room at 5:30pm, since late-day staffing is rarely what you see on a 10am visit.
Ask how pickup is verified. Playto’s Safe and Snug® safety standards include secure check-out procedures, and families get updates through the parent app during the day.
Ask what the first two weeks look like. A shorter first day and a parent staying for part of the morning are reasonable requests. The American Academy of Pediatrics also suggests visiting with your child before care begins, and a good daycare, Prospect Heights or anywhere else, will make room for that.
Playto’s Prospect Heights center at 979 Pacific St serves families across Prospect Heights, Crown Heights and the surrounding neighborhoods of central Brooklyn.
Families reach the Pacific Street center from across central Brooklyn. Service area: Prospect Heights, Brooklyn (Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Park Slope, Fort Greene, Clinton Hill, Bed-Stuy, Boerum Hill, Carroll Gardens, Windsor Terrace, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, and surrounding neighborhoods).
If you are weighing a 3-K application against a private spot for next fall, see the classroom before the January application window opens.
Spend a morning in the room your child would actually join, meet the teachers, and ask what pickup looks like at 5:45pm. You’ll leave with the hours, the routine and the people in front of you, which makes the comparison with a free seat concrete. Book your Prospect Heights tour or call 212-590-2445.
Most 3-K seats run 6 hours and 20 minutes a day, 180 days a year, closing for public school breaks and summer. Extended Day and Year seats run up to 10 hours year-round for eligible families. If you need care outside school days, compare against Playto’s holiday schedule.
Today the difference is mostly hours, calendar and enrollment rather than whether children learn. Full-day centers teach across the whole day on a working calendar, while school-based preschool follows the school year. Playto’s stage-by-stage curriculum shows what learning looks like from infancy to five.
Not in fall 2027. 2-K expands to 22 districts next fall, including Brooklyn’s Districts 16, 17, 19, 20, 21 and 32, and District 13, which covers Prospect Heights, is not on the list. For full-day care at this age, see how Young Explorers spend the day.
The application for fall 2027 runs from January 13 to February 26, 2027, for children born in 2024. Applications go through MySchools, linked from the NYC Public Schools 3-K page.
Yes, if your employer offers one. In 2026 you can set aside up to $7,500 before tax for eligible child care, including full-day programs and after-care around a free seat. Playto’s tuition and tax credit page covers the options families use.
Yes. Private centers enroll when a space opens, so start dates can follow your return to work instead of the school calendar. Review the enrollment forms ahead of your tour to speed things up.
